You may have come across the term ‘Chartered Financial Planner’ while doing your research into financial advisers and the value of the services they offer.

We’re very proud that Michael Sage, Founder & Director of Sage Wealth Management, was awarded the title of Chartered Financial Planner (CFP) by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) in 2018.

So, how does a Chartered Financial Planner differ from a standard Financial Planner? And why should you choose one, or a firm led by one?

What Is A Chartered Financial Planner?

In short, the CII’s Chartered Financial Planner qualification is the widely accepted ‘gold standard’ for professional financial planners and financial advisers.

Financial advisers that hold Chartered Financial Planner status are considered to be the most experienced and qualified in the profession.

Only a select number of financial advisers or financial planners in the UK have achieved Chartered Financial Planner status, and Sage is very proud to have one as its leader and principal adviser.

The accreditation is a mark of Michael’s expertise, experience, technical knowledge and capabilities, which he gladly shares with our other excellent Sage Wealth Management advisers to the great benefit of our clients.

It also means that Michael upholds the CII’s Code of Ethics at all times, which reflects Sage’s own dedication to honesty and transparency in all matters.

The status also demands that the holder commits to continually developing the knowledge and processes in any firm they lead – something that Michael is very happy to do, in his and the wider team’s belief in always going that extra mile to add value to our offering.

What Does It Take To Become A Chartered Financial Planner?

To become recognised as Chartered, a financial planner has to meet strict criteria relating to professional qualifications and ethical good practice.

Chartered status, which is awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) demonstrates a desire for individual advisers to go above and beyond the minimum standards required to act as a financial adviser.

A Chartered Financial Planner will have successfully passed through several CII Diplomas and CII Advanced Diploma examinations equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in the UK in areas such as Taxation, Trusts, Pension, Investment and Financial Planning.

As a Chartered body with more than 100 years’ heritage, the CII only awards Chartered titles to individuals that meet strict qualifying criteria, including:

  • upholding high ethical standards and values
  • providing knowledgeable advice backed up by qualifications
  • commitment to achieving good client outcomes.

In the CII’s own words: “The CII is empowered by the Privy Council to award Chartered status, and the award is only made in deserving cases. And while Chartered titles are steeped in history, they remain the benchmark of professional excellence and integrity.”

Why Choose A CFP?

Looking for professional advice on potentially complex issues like Estate Planning, Financial & Investment Planning Advice, Retirement Planning, Effective Tax Planning or Pension Planning?

Then it’s highly recommended that you speak to a financial adviser with Chartered Financial Planner status.

If you’re being advised by a Chartered adviser or a firm led by one – you can be confident in the knowledge that you’re dealing with one of the UK’s leaders in their field, and that they are committed to providing you with the highest levels of advice, service and support.

A Chartered Financial Planner will analyse your financial position and goals before recommending the best financial planning strategies.

CFPs are often experts in certain financial planning specialisms. They will provide you with a clear understanding of your options to help you choose the right financial strategies and products for your needs and aspirations.

All advice is ratified through advice reports, which help give you ‘the big picture’ and make informed financial decisions.

By taking advice from a Chartered Financial Planner like Michael Sage and his firm, you are choosing a practitioner that:

  • has attained an objective standard of technical knowledge and conduct
  • will follow ethical good practice at all times and continually update skills and knowledge in line with the latest market standards.

Keeping It Local

Only a select number of financial advisers attain and maintain Chartered Financial Planner status, meaning that there might only be a handful in any one local area.

Michael Sage is the principal adviser across four Sage Wealth Management’s offices in Chester-le-Street, Darlington, Hexham and Alnwick, which is one of the most respected financial advice firms in the North East.

Why Does It Matter That Your Adviser Is Local?

Well, while it’s true that communication tools like Zoom and Skype allow advisers to meet with clients after a fashion (especially during these socially distanced times), we all know that it’s not quite the same as meeting face-to-face.

Getting to really know our clients is part of our core ethos, because we believe that the better we understand them and their respective goals, the better and more personalised the advice that we can give to them.

Zoom and Skype are fine (and essential during lockdown), but not everyone is confident, comfortable or relaxed using these technologies. And we want our clients to feel relaxed when receiving financial advice, which is why Michael and our other excellent advisers are more than happy – social distancing measures allowing – to meet our clients at their homes, workplaces, restaurants, golf courses or other environments they feel most comfortable in.

We’re also proud North Easterners. We love this special region and are attuned to the way its people think.
